Fire guts garage, damages home

by - Story: 59242

A loud bang alerted residents of a Coldstream home that their attached garage was on fire.

One of the residents of the home in the 12600 block of Kidston Road looked out of the kitchen window just after 2:00 a.m. and saw a rapidly growing fire in the garage, says Coldstream Fire Chief Leo Lecavalier.

"They didn't have a whole lot of time to react, it went really quick," says Lecavalier.

The fire started to spread from the garage to the attic of the home, causing large flames to shoot into the night sky.

"It didn't take long going up Kidston Road to see it was pretty significant. Flames were about 20 feet above the house."

Lecavalier says firefighters used water cautiously in order to minimize water damage to the contents of the home.

Their efforts were successful and though the attic and kitchen area of the home suffered extensive water and fire damage, the rest of the home received only smoke damage.

Excessive use of water can flood unaffected areas of the structure and cause unnecessary damage to electronics, keepsakes and valuables, says Lecavalier.

No one was injured during the blaze, and a dog which disappeared as residents evacuated was found hiding under the back porch.

The cause of the blaze is still being investigated, but early indicators suggest it was electrical.
