Vernon Mayor Sean Harvey says the city is in shock after a speeding van killed a 39-year old RCMP auxiliary constable and seriously injured a 20-year veteran of the force.
The accident took place in downtown Vernon about two am Saturday when the van, stolen from Armstrong, ran a red light and crashed into a police cruiser.
A local nightclub had just closed and the fatal accident was witnessed by club patrons.
RCMP auxiliary constable Glen Evely, 39, was pronounced dead at the scene. Evely leaves behind a wife and children.
No charges have yet been laid against the 18-year-old male allegedly driving the van according to Vernon RCMP Cpl. Al Lucier.
Special investigators are looking into the fatal accident.
The 44 year old constable is in Kelowna General Hospital undergoing tests and treatment for serious injuries he received in the crash.
