Regional Board Highlights

Emergency Planning Grant
  • The Regional District has received a grant to enhance its Emergency Plan. The Union of BC Municipalities is administering the program with $25,000 in funding provided by the Ministry of Solicitor General and Public Safety. The money will be used for Emergency Operations Centre staff training, to develop geographic and neighbourhood evacuation maps and to update the computer-based municipal mapping systems for the effective transfer of information in an emergency.

Development Permit Approved
  • The Regional Board has approved a Development Permit for a proposed multi-family housing project on Shannon View Drive. The two-storey building will provide 14 units along with 23 underground and 12 above ground parking spaces. Several conditions must be met before the permit is issued, including receipt of a plan for remediation and protection of an environmentally sensitive area on the .53-hectare property.

Proposed Resort Development
  • The Regional Board has given first reading to Official Community Plan and Zoning Amendment Bylaws for a proposed waterfront resort development. The applicant wants to build a 101-unit, four-storey townhouse/condominium resort on the 2.3-hectare property that is presently zoned for the Happy Valley Resort campground along Pritchard Drive. Before a public hearing is scheduled the applicant must meet several conditions including confirmation that the proposed development can be connected to an existing water system, and that plans be provided showing how public access will be secured along the waterfront foreshore.

Proposed Prohibited Animal Bylaw Amendment
  • The Regional Board has given first reading to an amendment of the Prohibited Animal Bylaw. The owners/operators of ‘Croc Talk’ have applied to become a Recognized Facility as designated in the Bylaw. Once a facility and it employees have met the criteria and standards of animal care required to be a Recognized Facility, the terms of the bylaw do not apply to prohibited animals within the facility. The Board has asked that application be referred to the SPCA, TRACS and Humane Society for comment in consideration of the request.

Award Of Excellence
  • The Regional Board received a letter of congratulations from the Mayor of Dawson Creek for winning the Leadership and Innovation Award from the Union of BC Municipalities. The award was presented during the recent UBCM convention in Kelowna. Dawson Creek Mayor Wayne Dahlen’s letter says the Regional District has set a new benchmark for other municipalities to shoot for with its Casa Loma Trunk Sewer Project that was the successful result of an outstanding partnership with the Westbank First Nation.
