Vernon coyote attack

Vernon RCMP have issued a warning after a coyote attacked a family pet.

According to police, a coyote attacked a dog on Halloween in the 3000 block of Allenby Way.

"The coyote came up to the residence and attacked the dog causing serious injuries," says RCMP Constable, Cathy Scott.

"The dog was taken to the vet by the family. Conservation Officers were advised of the incident."

Scott says coyotes are naturally curious animals, however, they are timid and will usually run away if challenged.

"Problems occur when coyotes start to become comfortable around people usually from being fed or by gaining access to a compost bin."

If approached by a coyote, Scott says you should:
  • Make yourself look as large as possible
  • Wave your arms and throw objects at the coyote
  • Shout in a loud, aggressive voice
  • Pick up small children and carry them.
