Hydro offers local grants

BC Hydro is offering community grants of up to $10,000.

The utility's Vernon office has issued a press release encouraging non-profits, registered charities and community organizations in the Thompson, Okanagan and Columbia regions to apply for grants supporting projects focused on energy efficiency, reducing carbon emissions and minimizing environmental impacts, as well as youth programs in trades, science, technology, engineering and math, and safety education.

Two types of grants are up for grabs:

  • Grassroots grants: funding up to $2,000 for local community-based programs.
  • Broad impact grants: funding up to $10,000 for organizations that wish to expand an existing program or develop a new program in multiple communities.

Applications are open until March 29.

In 2018, BC Hydro funded projects including the Okanagan Landing & District Community Association’s LED green initiative and the Columbia Shuswap Invasive Species Society. The Castlegar Fire Department also received a grant for its community safety net booklets.
