City's good citizen humbled

Tuesday morning's coffee was anything but usual for Carol Armstrong.

The Vernon senior was surprised with the JCI Vernon Good Citizen of the Year award as she and her friends met at the Village Green Mall food court for their regular chat session.

JCI's Hailey Rilkoff surprised Armstrong with balloons and a bouquet as she made the announcement.

A humbled Armstrong said she almost didn't come out to the gathering because of this morning's snow.

"Carol is an outstanding example of what it means to be a good citizen. Throughout the year, she spends countless hours to building a stronger community. Basically, Carol has dedicated herself to helping others. She is the epitome of a great leader – she inspires those around her to do better and be better," said nominator Randy McDermid.

"I'm very thankful and grateful, and surprised of course – and humbled," said Armstrong.

Armstrong founded the “Single Friends 60+ Group,” which has brought together older members of the community for 17 years. She organizes a multitude of events for the more than 80 members, including twice weekly coffee get togethers, monthly dinners, dances, camping trips, hiking outings, card nights and more. She also produces a monthly newsletter.

In addition, she visits sick members in the hospital, gives rides to those who need them, house and pet sits, and has raised money for the Turtle Valley Donkey Refuge Society in Sorrento.

"We were really touched by the number of weekly and monthly events Carol is instrumental in organizingfor her group. It’s great to see such an engaged member of our community working to create friendships and facilitate activities for local seniors who are living on their own," said Rilkoff.

Armstrong will have a place of honour in the Vernon Winter Carnival Parade on Feb. 2 and at the Vernon Winter Carnival Winter Break Out at Schubert Centre on Feb. 6.

She also receives $500 from Kidston and Co. to donate to the local charity of her choice.
