Looking for life savers

Vernon Search and Rescue are looking for life savers.

VSAR is recruiting new members and will be hosting an open house Jan. 16 at 7 p.m. at 9850 Aberdeen Road.

“We are looking for people to join our team who are ready and willing to deploy on a moment's notice,” said Dan Hoekstra, VSAR president.

VSAR has been active for more than 50 years and currently has 70 members and numerous pieces of equipment.

Search manager Pete Wise said VSAR is ready to respond to any call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

“We perform search and rescues in rural environments, urban environments, in very mountainous terrain, very rugged terrain,” said Coralie Nairn, search manager.

Nairn said rescuers have the training and equipment needed to conduct rescues on land and water.

“Most of our tasks involve working in the bush somewhere,” said Leigh Pearson, search master.

Applicants must be 19 or older, pass a criminal record check, be willing to attend searches, training exercises and community events
