Mural and tasty butter tarts

It's more than just some paint on a brick wall.

It is a history of food production in the Lumby area and became a focal point for community involvement.

Robin Ledrew, of the Monashee Arts Council, said dozens of residents added their personal touch to the downtown mural called The Land That Feeds Us.

The idea for the mural was born almost a year ago and for the past six months, numerous people have taken brush in hand to bring the brightly coloured mural to life.

Funding came from local businesses and the BC Arts Council.

Ledrew said the mural tells the story of food production in the area dating back thousands of years to the Indigenous peoples to the modern farmers.

The official unveiling of the mural at noon Saturday will be a grand affair with a petting zoo, art sale and other activities.

It will also coincide with the popular Butter Tart Festival which will feature some of the best home made butter tarts to ever come out of a oven.

Up for grabs will be bragging rights to the best butter tart in the land - or at least the best butter tart at the festival.

The fourth Annual Butter Tart Festival gets underway at 8:30 a.m. at Lumby's Oval Park, but get there early as they sell out every year.

This tasty event happens alongside the Saturday market 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
