Do not be alarmed if you come across some dead fish in Okanagan Lake or along the beaches.
A photo displaying a small pile of dead fish found on Vernon's Kin Beach made it's way to the Vernon & Area Community Forum causing discussion.
The photo was posted to the Facebook page on Saturday out of genuine concern by a Vernon resident.
"We counted as we walked halfway down the beach 14 [dead fish] and then we came to this awful sight and smell [the photo]," said Koral Moore-Klynchyk, Vernon resident.
As of now, Okanagan residents shouldn't be concerned, says Fisheries Biologist Eric Hegerat
Hegerat said localized fish kills are quite common in Okanagan Lake this time of year, especially with strong winds.
"The reported quantity of fish is quite low, and I don’t believe there is any immediate cause for concern," he said.
Hegerat tells Castanet the fisheries management section will continue to monitor the situation and potentially collect samples for analysis.
An abundance of debris mixed with trash still covers the shoreline of Kin Beach.
"Every one of the beaches I’ve been to so far doesn't look anything like Kin," Moore-Klynchyk said. "I was quite surprised to see people swimming, I sure wouldn’t have been."
Most beaches in the Vernon area are now clean and ready for public use.
At this time it is unknown when Kin Beach will be clear of the excessive debris and garbage.
