Bringing the past to life

Falkland has taken on a carnival-like feel this weekend for the 100th annual stampede.

Along with the regular rodeo fair are a few special events including the Bucking Horse Drive that kicked off the three-day rodeo Saturday morning.

It has been decades since horses were driven through the centre of town, but stampede manager Jason Churchill said it is just one of the special events to celebrate the milestone.

“We've added quite a few things this year just to celebrate our 100th year,” said Churchill, adding the drive was a throwback to the '30 and 40's when they were a common occurrence.

“Before cattle liners were invented they had to drive the bucking horses from Douglas Lake or Chase or Kamloops or Vernon or wherever.”

The horses were take just south of Falkland and then driven through town to the rodeo grounds.

Rodeo action kicked off at 1 p.m. and carries on through the day.

At 9 p.m. the dance starts featuring The Serious Dogs.

On Sunday, the popular parade takes place at 1 p.m. Highway 97 will be closed for 30 minutes to accommodate the parade.

The rodeo gets underway at 2 p.m.

On Monday, the heavy horse pull takes place at 10 a.m. with the rodeo getting underway at 1 p.m.
