'It can be scary'

Okanagan paramedic Michelle Casanova is on a mission.

Michelle along with about 40 others who are paramedics or family and friends of a paramedic will bicycle from Osoyoos to Kamloops next month.

The 400-kilometre trek is in support of the Canadian Paramedic Memorial Foundation. The foundation is building a monument dedicated to the Canadian Paramedics who have lost their lives in the line-of-duty.

"We're riding to raise money for a national monument in Ottawa and the paramedics are the only people who don't have a monument in the nation's capital," Casanova said. "We even have paramedics from the East Coast coming to join."

Casanova has already managed to raise her target goal of $500 but hopes to raise even more because everything raised goes toward the monument.

"There are rides in different provinces across Canada so everyone is working together to create this," she said. "We would like to acknowledge paramedics who have lost their lives while they are out there saving others putting ourselves at risk."

Paramedics are first responders who put their lives at risk daily in an attempt to save others.

"It's really honouring those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice," Casanova said. "We want to make sure that these people are remembered and given the recognition they deserve."

As a paramedic, Michelle remember's incidents that were close calls, but is thankful that she made it out safely.

"It can be scary," she said. "People are very distracted driving out there."

"But it's very rewarding being out there on someone's worst day it's a different experience."

Many British Columbia paramedics have lost their lives while attempting to save someone else's.

The bike ride takes place from June 7 to 10.

The riders will start in Osoyoos on June 7 and spend the night in Kelowna. On June 8 the bikers will ride to Vernon and spend the night.

The following day they will ride to Sorrento and on the last day, they will finish the fundraiser by biking to Kamloops.
