Making the cut

He may not have won, but Vernon barber Brett Kelly was thrilled just to be part of the largest barber convention in the world.

Late last year, Kelly was selected as one of the top 10 barbers in the nation and at the end of February, he travelled to Montreal where the top barber of 2017 was selected.

Kelly is the co-owner of The Gentlemen's Shop and Shave Parlour in Vernon and has been plying his craft for seven years. Like most barbers, Kelly posts numerous pictures of his work online.

That got the attention of a Montreal-based company BabylissPRO and put him in the running to be named the Canadian Barber of the Year.

“I was not the one who won, but my buddy Matty Conrad, ended up taking the victory home,” said Kelly. “He was the guy I voted for and I had been telling him all along I wanted him to win. If anyone deserved this award, this man did.”

Kelly was the only nominee from a small centre, with other barbers coming from Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal and other Canadian metropolises.

“I'm glad I was part of that. It still blows my mind how I was even involved in the top 10. Like I said, it's a win,” said Kelly.
