Skier dies in backcountry

A man who was airlifted from the backcountry east of Cherryville Monday is dead, after he was found in a tree well.

The 51-year-old Vancouver man died near Keefer Lake Lodge on Feb. 26.

"The Vernon North Okanagan RCMP, received a report of a backcountry skier that got separated from his group on a ski run near Keefer Lake Lodge while on a Cat-Ski tour of 14 people," said Const. Kelly Brett of the Vernon RCMP.

The ski group found the man in a tree well, shortly after they called police, but he was unresponsive.

The incident was initially reported as an avalanche.

“BC Ambulance Service attended the scene and air-lifted the male to the nearest medical facility, however, resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful and the male did not survive the injuries sustained,” said Brett.

Police say the death is not suspicious, and the BC Coroner continues to investigate.
