Semi-truck loses steel beams

A section of Highway 97 between Kamloops and Vernon was closed Monday night after massive steel beams came off a semi-truck near Barnhartvale Rd.

A Castanet reader sent us an image and a description of what she saw.

"We were stopped there for at least an hour and a half trying to control traffic so no cars ran into it. Not entirely sure what happened, but the chains on the semi snapped off and there were a lot of sparks. I've since found out that the beams were 53 feet long bridge girders: 12 feet wide, 3 feet deep."

"Traffic was backed up but people were able to pass slowly in the one lane alternating between directions."

According to the news tip, nobody was hurt and the beams did not hit any cars.

The beams have been pushed out of the way.
