Skating on thin ice

Chantelle Deacon

With outdoor temperatures constantly fluctuating it's important to remember to be cautious when planning outdoor activities that involve frozen lakes and ponds.

On Monday Vernon Search and Rescue were called to Kal Beach because people were skating on the lake when the ice just wasn't thick enough.

The ice broke and although the water appeared frozen it was quite thin after freezing, thawing and refreezing over the weekend.

Keep in mind that although the lake appears frozen in areas it is possible that it can't support a lot of weight.

If you are unsure if the ice is thick enough it's a good idea to just stay off the ice.
