Doing the RCMP proud

Vernon RCMP honoured one of their own for volunteer work in the community.

Cpl. Yannik Lescareau was recognized as the RCMP Volunteer of the Year during the Vernon Winter Carnival Winter Breakout luncheon Wednesday.

Lescareau has been the driving force behind a hockey tournament that has raised more than $77,000 since it began in 2014.

The annual tournament is held at Apex Mountain with all proceeds going to the BC Children Hospital Foundation for Sick Kids.

The tournament now boasts 120 teams.

Lescareau was nominated for the award by Vernon's top cop, Supt. Jim McNamara

"He has always proudly identified himself as a member of the RCMP in the many interviews promoting the event he has provided. His involvement in the event and its benefit to such a worthy cause brings positive attention to the RCMP and this detachment,” said McNamara.

The award carries with it a cheque for $500 which Lescareau donated to Autism Okanagan.
