Everyone loves a parade

The 58th annual Vernon Winter Carnival officially got underway Friday, but the big kickoff was today as thousands of people attended the annual parade.

The event was a wonder to behold as dozens of floats embraced this year's carnival theme of Wonderland.

Alice in Wonderland dominated the parade with numerous bright and colourful floats portraying characters from the timeless tale.

Vicki Proulx, executive co-ordinator, Vernon Winter Carnival, said more than 100 entries took part in the parade this year.

“Everyone has really gone with the Wonderland theme which is really fantastic to see. Weather they are doing Alice in Wonderland or Winter Wonderland, they have really stepped up this year,” said Proulx. “We are thrilled with how many entries we have.”

Past estimates have placed the number of people who take in the parade at more than 10,000, depending on the weather.

“There are tons of stuff happening on opening weekend,” said Proulx, and many of them are free.

The annual B.C. Snow Sculpture Championships take place at SilverStar Mountain this weekend with the winning team heading to Quebec for the national competition.

“All the events go into Sunday as well. You don't want to miss out. There's something for everyone,” she said.
