Pedophile sentenced

A man who pleaded guilty to sexually molesting two of his nieces will be spending time in jail.

In a Vernon courtroom Wednesday, Justice Richard Hewson sentenced the man to just over two years, after considering time already served.

The man, who cannot be identified to protect the victims, admitted he molested his two young nieces in 2016 and 2017.

Crown Council Margaret Cissell asked for a sentence of up to 18 months on charges relating to the first victim and up to 3.5 years for charges relating to the second child.

Defence attorney Courteney Simmons asked for a sentence of three years total for both cases.

Cissell said the assaults included vaginal digital penetration as well as fondling of the girls' private areas.

The assaults on the two girls took place from December 2016 to June 2017, before the man was confronted by the girls' grandmother.

Cissell said in a text conversation, the man told the grandmother “I couldn't keep my filthy hand to myself. I deserve whatever is coming to me.”

Cissell pointed out the man did plead guilty to all charges to spare the children and their family the ordeal of a trial.

He also admitted to thoughts of pedophilia and is hopeful he can get treatment for his urges.

Cissell said the man was rated as high to moderate risk to re-offend.

Simmons pointed out, and Cissell agreed, the man expressed remorse at what he had done.

However, Cissell said the man was in a position of authority over the children and he knew he had pedophile tendencies, but took no steps to avoid contact with the young girls, one of whom he molested during a sleep over at his home.

Simmons noted the man did not prey upon the girls and the crimes were ones of opportunity.

Simmons said the man “was very open” about his compulsions and after he was charged he sought out the help of a counsellor and psychiatrist and is on medication to reduce his sex drive.

“He has taken steps to deal with his compulsions,” said Simmons.

Along with a jail sentence, the man must follow a list of conditions that include, but are not limited to: a 10-year ban on public spaces like pools and parks; must not come within 500 metres of the victims, and the man must register as a sexual offender.
