'Coach Peter' passes away

The founder of the Vernon Speed Skating club has passed away at 84.

Peter Blokker died last week while visiting family in his native Holland.

Blokker was hailed throughout the speed skating community for his dedication to the sport and his years of hard work and competition.

A post on the Vernon Speed Skating Club Facebook page, pays homage to Blokker: “It is a sad sad day for the speed skating community. It is with great sadness that we deliver the news of the passing of Peter Blokker. Peter was one of the founders of the Vernon Speed Skating Club in 1992, and has been instrumental in the development of the Club for 26 years. Peter had a passion for the sport of speed skating in many ways. He was a competitor, a mentor, a coach, and an advocate. Peter will always be remembered for his devotion to the Club and to the sport.
"On February 10, 2018, the Vernon Speed Skating Club will be hosting the Funale event, and we would like to take the time to have a moment of silence during this event to remember our good friend.
Peter will be missed greatly. Our condolences go out to the family and friends who knew and loved Peter so dearly. And, thoughts and prayers are with everyone who share in this passing of a wonderful man.'
