Lucky no kids in crash

Chantelle Deacon

UPDATE: 2:20 p.m.

Lake Country RCMP continue to investigate this morning's collision between a school bus and dump truck.

They confirm no students were on the bus when it collided with the truck, just after 8 a.m.

According to witness reports, RCMP say the school bus entered into the intersection from a stopped position, northbound on Okanagan Centre Road East, when it struck the driver’s side of the dump truck, which had been westbound on Oceola Road.

The crash demolished the front end of the school bus and sent the dump truck into the ditch.

Both drivers were examined at the scene by paramedics. The school bus driver, a Lake Country man in his sixties, was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

”It was certainly quite fortunate that the bus operator had, just moments prior, delivered the last of his young passengers to a school nearby,” says Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey.

“There would have been a strong likelihood of significant injuries sustained, given the extent of damage to both commercial vehicles, had there been students on board.”

Witnesses to the crash are asked to contact Reserve Const. Dave Caley at 250-766-2288.

ORIGINAL: 8:28 a.m.

A school bus and a dump truck have collided in Lake Country.

It happened at the intersection of Lake Hill Drive and Oceola Road, just in front of The Lakes sign.

No kids were on the bus when it crashed.

One Castanet reader has said the roads are like a sheet of ice.

"Pure black ice. They are awful out here. I have slid three or four times."

Another said  "Six emergency vehicles can be seen. Fortunately does not appear to be serious but have no idea. Kids will be late for school."

The bus hit a truck. Both drivers walked away shaken up.
