Kids support food bank

Students at a Lake Country elementary school have come together in support of their local food bank.

Kids from kindergarten to Grade 6 have been collecting non-perishable food items for Davidson Road Elementary’s annual ‘12 Days of Christmas’ initiative.

“Grade 5 students collect all the food and organize it,” said Drew Bonneteau, Grade 5 teacher. “Then after 12 days we contact the local food bank and then they come and pick it up.”

Students brought food items from home and filled 47 boxes that weigh-in at about 20 pounds each.

The official weigh-in isn’t until Thursday afternoon but Bonneteau anticipates there will be nearly 1,000 pounds of food to donate.

“It’s really great to see their actions support and help the community,” said Bonneteau, adding that the students feel a sense of pride and accomplishment.

The ‘12 Days of Christmas’ fundraiser started on Dec. 8 and students collected their final food items on Tuesday Dec. 19.
