Big win for VSAR

Christmas will come a little early for Vernon Search and Rescue after winning a contest for a new $20,000 KIOTI Mechron UTV.

It was a come-from-behind win for the volunteer group that was hundreds of votes behind Cleveland, North Carolina.

“As of yesterday morning we were more than 800 votes behind. We gained 2,000 votes yesterday. The community involvement was far more than we expected,” said Trevor Honigman with VSAR.

“We beat them by 450 votes. The community rallied in so many ways. We had groups from across the country supporting us.”

Honigman said the win is not yet official, but the VSAR video is the only one left at the voting website.

The UTV is a much-needed piece of equipment for the group that fundraises for all of its gear.

“There's a hole in our equipment and this thing fits perfect,” said Honigman, adding it can be used to haul people, equipment and even a stretcher.

“It's the right machine too. It's not a sport machine; its a diesel-powered UTV. It's designed from the ground up for work. It's exactly the type of machine search and rescue needs,” he said, adding local Kioti dealer Timberstar is a big supporter of VSAR.
