Improving Camp Hurlburt

The City of Vernon is hoping to take control of Camp Hurlburt on Okanagan Lake and spend some money on it.

The North Okanagan Regional District purchased the 2.5 acre property two years ago to ensure it remained in public hands. The camp had been operated by Trinity United Church for many years.

During budget deliberations Wednesday, city council reviewed the $490,000 set aside for spending on lake access sites owned by the city along Okanagan Lake.

Earlier this week, council decided to cut the number of sites slated for work from eight to four, leaving some cash left over.

“We're thinking of taking that money and adding on to what we can do for Camp Hurlburt,” said Coun. Catherine Lord.

Council is expected to direct staff to funnel the additional funds to the camp.

Lord acknowledged the camp was not in the city's hands at the moment but said negotiations were underway with the regional district.
