Let's not ignore cenotaph

Although Vernon's main Remembrance Day ceremony will remain at Kal Tire Place, the city will be offering to supply a mic with a speaker and a representative to attend a smaller Nov. 11 memorial if the local Legion approves.

“Even though we have accomodated most of the people at Kal Tire Place, I do think there should be some recognition at the cenotaph,” said Coun. Catherine Lord.

Both Mayor Akbal Mund and Coun. Scott Anderson said that any type of service would be up to brass of Legion Branch 25.

“It's the veterans who should decide,” said Mund during Tuesday's council meeting, pointing out there are two monuments to fallen soldiers in Vernon, including the Dragoons' on 25th Avenue, and others who are buried in the local cemetery.

But Lord said a quick offer to the Legion wouldn't hurt.

“Membership is going down, they're getting older,” said Lord. “They would likely appreciate it.”

There have been complaints about the local of a memorial service at the downtown cenotaph for a number of years, including this year.

About 2,000 people attended the Remembrance Day ceremony at Kal Tire Place on Saturday.
