Helping youth get ACTIVE

The Canadian Mental Health Association wants to help youths become more active to help not only their bodies, but their minds as well.

So, the CMHA has launched ACTIVE, a program to improve the physical and mental health of young adults.

It is estimated 10-20 per cent of Canadian youth are affected by a mental health issue. Schizophrenia affects an estimated one per cent of the population and often emerges between the ages of 16-30. Suicide continues to be the second leading cause of death among 15-24 year-olds in B.C., after motor vehicle accidents.

“Research has found regular physical activity is effective in managing depression and reducing the symptoms of anxiety. Exercise helps counteract withdrawal, isolation, low self-esteem, inactivity and a feeling of hopelessness,” said Sue Myhre, manager of programs and services for CMHA Vernon. “This low-barrier program brings youth together in a positive community while encouraging movement.”

With support from the TELUS Thompson Okanagan Community Board, CMHA Vernon Branch is offering a new program for young adults that will tackle common obstacles to fitness.

“TELUS’ support means that we can provide transportation, speakers and a variety of fun group activities that encourage movement and healthy lifestyle at no cost to participants. By offering low barrier fitness programs to young adults in our community we can continue to improve the mental health of today’s youth.”
