Classic theatres celebrated

Classic theatres will be the focus of a documentary that will include a well-known Okanagan movie house.

Out of the Interior: Survival of the Small-town Cinema in British Columbia is a full-length exploration of classic movie theatres in BC’s southern interior, from Vernon’s Towne Cinema to Creston's Tivioli; from Grand Forks’ GEM to Revelstoke's Roxy.

The movie was made by Curtis Emde, who grew up in Vernon and his wife Silmara and asks why such theatres are fading from the landscape.

The filmmakers delve into the history of public film exhibition in B.C., celebrate the communal moviegoing experience in the present – and offer a glimpse of the movie house’s future in the digital age.

The movie will play in several classic theatres throughout B.C., including the Towne on Oct. 2.
