Evacuees welcome at ranch

Historic O'Keefe Ranch is offering wildfire evacuees a chance to forget about the mayhem of the past few weeks by visiting the ranch for free.

The ranch is offering free admission to any evacuees displaced by the wildfires who are staying in the Vernon area. Evacuees are asked to show their driver's license or provincial ID showing proof of residence to enter the ranch.

The corn maze is also free to evacuees.

As of Wednesday morning, 667 evacuees from Williams Lake and other areas affected by provincial wildfires had registered with the City of Vernon's Emergency Social Services (ESS).

And while the ranch is offering free admission to people, it is also able to help four-legged evacuees.

The ranch is registered with BC Cattlemen's Association, Horse Council BC and is on the Emergency Evacuation List with the City of Vernon and City of Armstrong and is already housing some evacuees and their horses from Williams Lake.

If anyone needs room for housing of horses or possibly cattle, and dry camping for tents, trailers and RV's, ranch officials said they will do their best to accommodate.

Contact Warren Smith, Armstrong's emergency program coordinator, at [email protected] for more details and to make arrangements.

Sunday July 23, is Family Fun Day at the ranch, and there is a variety of activities taking place thanks to the support of the Community Foundation North Okanagan.

In the Greenhow arena, professional rider and trainer Lee Poncelet and his working dog will give a demonstration with his horses on working cow horse and cutting horse activities and Adam Degenstein will provide a four-horse demonstration with Clydesdales.

Guests are encouraged to try gold panning with the Vernon Placer Miner Club, enjoy a performance by the members of the North Okanagan Pipes and Drums Club with highland dancers and listen to the upbeat tunes by musical trio Chipkojones.

Kids aged five and up can create a Western watercolour inspired by the exhibitions in the O’Keefe Kids Korner. The ranch also offers guests stagecoach rides, pony rides, tractor rides and old fashioned games. New this summer, is a curator’s tour of the ranch by horse drawn wagon with cowboy Ken Mather.
