Sandy Beach algae bloom

The Okanagan Indian Band is warning of an algae bloom at Sandy Beach.

In a statement on its webpage, the OKIB said the bloom was reported at 3 p.m. Friday.

A picture shows a green substance washing up on the beach.

The bloom has been reported to the First Nations Health Authority which works with Interior Health.

The band issued an order earlier this month banning people from swimming in the Sandy Beach area, next to Kin Park, because of possible contaminants due to recent flooding.

Results of water samples taken from the beach area and tested by the First Nations Health Authority found traces of ecoli, according to a document released by the band last month.

It stated that on June 26, the bacteriological water conditions were "not acceptable" and people should avoid swimming there.
