Seeds, plants and more

The Vernon Recreation Centre will be a seedy part of town next weekend.

The third annual Vernon Seedy Saturday takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on March 18 and features local seed and plant sellers, locally grown and made food, natural products, chickens, eggs, honey and much more.

Put on by SENS (Sustainable Environment Network Society), the event is a place to find special seeds and heirloom varieties of vegetables.

There will also be educational displays with environmental information, seed saving and gardening tips.

Members of the Vernon Garden Club will be on hand to answer questions.

Participants can learn about growing their own "medicine" in the garden, growing a permaculture food forest and seed-starting.

The seminars include:

  • 11 a.m. - Medicine from the Garden and Food Forest - Dr. Karin Kilpatrick M.D
  • Noon - Food Forests: Gardening for 1,000 years - Richard Walker, Food Forester and author of "Food Forestry North of the 49th"
  • 1 p.m. - Introduction to Seed Starting and Seedling Care - Tessa Wetherill, Market Gardener

Seedy Saturday also includes a free community seed swap table where people can bring extra seeds or plants to share with others and take seeds and plants that they want.
