Paramedics seek support

Paramedics in the North Okanagan continue to seek support from the public in their bid to be given the same collective bargaining rights as firefighters and police officers and be deemed an essential service.

“Canvassers will be at the Vernon Vipers game against Victoria tonight (Friday) and again at Silver Star Rotary's 'Project Save A Life' on Saturday,” said Dean Perry, spokesperson for local paramedics. That event is taking place at Clarence Fulton School.

Local petitioners need to collect 4,600 signatures from the area and send the documents to Elections BC by Apr. 9. The petition requires 10 per cent of registered voters to sign in each of the 85 electoral districts by that date.

During canvassing at Safeway in Vernon last week, about 700 people signed the petition, said Perry.

“We have other canvassers getting signatures elsewhere. We'd like to get about 6,000 from the Vernon-Monashee riding.”
