Saving the pets

Vernon Fire Rescue received some life-saving equipment Thursday, but this gear is focused on saving the four-legged members of society.

John and Teresa Deak donated three sets of pet oxygen masks to the main firehall and veterinarian Jessica Barker from Tri-Lakes Animal Hospital showed fire crews how to use the equipment.

Cpt. Chris Kulak said firefighters have always made an effort to save furry family members and had to use masks designed for humans, but the new equipment is designed specifically for animals.

“We've been given another tool in our toolbox to deliver how we provide our service,” said Kulak. “Emergencies affect all walks of life including pets and this gives us the opportunity to make a difference for those that need our help.”

Cpt. Brent Bond said until now, crews had to improvise with the equipment they had on hand.

“This will make it a lot easier,” said Bond. “As everyone knows pets are part of the family and if we can help those families members out it's just something we can do for them.”

John Deak said providing the fire department with the masks is a way to give back.

“You see the first responder crews working so hard to revive a dog or a cat. It's just so awesome and we just wanted to give back to the community,” said John.

The Deaks operate the Full Service Real Estate shop and have their own 'fur-kids' which was part of the motivation for donating the equipment.
