Paramedics seek support

Area paramedics are looking for public support in their bid to be given the same collective bargaining rights as firefighters and police officers.

Local paramedics are seeking signatures on an initiative petition to amend the Fire and Police Services Collective Bargaining Rights act to give paramedics greater bargaining rights.

Currently, paramedics in B.C. are not deemed as an essential service. This act would remove the right of ambulance paramedics to strike and the right of the employer to lockout during an impasse.

Currently, the roughly 4,000 ambulance paramedics are under the Health Authorities Act, meaning they bargain along with hospital support staff like lab techs, clerks and cleaning staff.

The petition requires 10 per cent of registered voters to sign in each of the 85 electoral districts by April 9.

Paramedics and registered canvassers will be at Safeway Vernon Square Mall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday Feb. 9.
