Top of the hill

The cream of the crop is helping 'over the hill' racers at Silver Star Mountain Resort, ahead of this weekend's Silver Star Over The Hill Downhill Race – part of Vernon Winter Carnival.

Former World Cup ski champion and Olympian Rob Boyd has been coaching skiers from all the teams at a four-day training camp.

“This is a fun event but there are bragging rights on race day,” said Boyd. “It matters, to some more than others.”

Boyd should know. The former Vernonite finished on the podium six times and captured 28 top-fifteen results in his twelve years on the national team, according to the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame website.

The skier qualified for six world championships and three Olympics before retiring from World Cup competition in 1997 and competing in the professional downhill series.

He also coaches.

“I'm just basically sharing some of my experience and knowledge ... with the young at heart,” laughed Boyd.

Rules for the long running recreational downhill ski race include:

  • teams are entered in a category based on the combined team age ranging from 65 to 225+ years
  • teams must have one female and can have team members as young as 10

Qualifying races take place on Saturday with the main event on Sunday.
