Petition to save campers

A Lumby resident is hoping to convince village council to allow a small group of people to remain in travel trailers at the Lions campground until winter comes to an end.

Only a few people are still living at the campground without running water but all were ordered to leave by Feb. 15th due to village regulations that do not allow camping over the winter.

“We're still in the middle of winter and there are only summer tires on those campers,” said Arlene Coulter, a local resident. “I'm just asking council to let them stay until the roads are clear and it is safe for them to move.”

Of those left, one woman has three dogs and refuses to move from the $300 a month site without her animals, making it tough to find a new home.

Coulter has started a petition which she hopes locals will sign in support of the campers.

She hopes to garner enough signatures to take the petition to the village hall ahead of the next council meeting.

“Why should these people suffer?” asked Coulter. “I don't know if it's going to be any good (but) I want the council to know that we, the people who elected them, want a say in what happens in the village.”

For those interested in signing the petition, which asked the village to allow the campers to stay where they are until Apr. 1, Coulter has dropped them off around town at: Sheardowns grocery store, the Snac Shac, the health food store, Connect coffee house, Ida's bakery, Sisters restaurant , Jitter Beans coffee and the Lumby Legion.
