United Way: We need help

With just 2 weeks to go until the end of the year, the United Way North Okanagan Columbia Shuswap is concerned about funding its programs next year.

Donations are down significantly, according to Linda Yule, executive director.

“We have 30 programs that count on United Way funding to provide services for people in our area,” said Yule. “Last year we were asked for 40 per cent more than we had available to distribute.”

The local United Way is only at 47 per cent of its $260,000 goal.

“I am very worried for programs that are making positive outcomes for local people.”

Yule said that several of the agencies funded by the United Way are being asked for more services.

“What do we not fund: post-partum depression, or after school programs, or pre-natal nutrition, or seniors?” Yule asked. “We don’t want to see these groups having to fundraise, they should be focusing on developing and providing the needed programs.

For those wishing to give, Yule said donations can be made online, you can mail or drop a cheque off to 3304 30th Avenue or call 250-549-1346 to give by credit card.
