Decorated for bravery

Vernon's Justin Huska joined other Canadian heros at a ceremony Friday at Rideau Hall in Ottawa, the official residence of Governor General David Johnston.

Johnston pinned a Medal of Bravery on Huska for a daring and dangerous rescue of two people from a burning vehicle near Cache Creek on Feb. 27, 2014.

Two other men, Kris Gunderson of Delta and Mike Heide of Kamloops, were also awarded bravery medals for their part in the rescue.

Alerted by a passenger waving for attention through the car's sunroof, Huska pulled the woman to safety before returning with Gunderson and Heide for the second victim.

Despite the flames and smoke coming through the broken windows, they used a pry bar to gain access to the driver and brought him a safe distance away.

Created in 1972, the medal is awarded to those who have performed acts of bravery in hazardous circumstances.
