Lumby needs jobs

Lumby residents have listed the need for employment opportunities as the number one issue facing villagers.

Results of a community survey sent out to 720 households have been posted on the Village of Lumby website. At total of 222 residents replied.

“We wanted to get a sense of where people were at and what their priorities were,” said Mayor Kevin Acton.

Respondents also pointed to the need for affordable housing and medical service practioners, according to the survey.

“I was pleasantly surprised (by the results),” said Acton. “Many found Lumby an affordable place to live.”

A total of 85 per cent of respondents said they found the village affordable to live in, with only five per cent stating it was too expensive.

The call for a gym/fitness facility beat out more transit as for what is lacking in the village.

“Two of the biggest, glaring things were (the percentages who want better) road and sidewalk maintenance which is always challenging in a small town,” Acton said.

He thought people might call for a street sweeper, since the village is lacking one.

“I thought it was a huge priority but it's not.”

Acton said the results would be used “in setting our budgets and to justify our actions in our strategic plan.”
