Call for electoral reform

North Okanagan-Shuswap MP Mel Arnold is calling on the government to hold a national referendum on electoral reform, after results of a local survey showed many people in favour of a country-wide vote.

A total of 2,627 residents in the constituency returned mail-in ballots to the MP by the Sept. 30 deadline, with 74 per cent in favour of a referendum.

Other responses showed just over 25 per cent opposed to a national vote and 1.3 per cent undecided.

“It is encouraging to see a strong response from constituents,” said Arnold. “Canadians have demonstrated that they are concerned about electoral reform and they want a national referendum to allow voters to say yes or no to changing Canada’s system of democracy.”

An all-party parliamentary committee studying electoral reform is scheduled to submit a report and recommendations to Parliament by Dec. 1. A government bill on the issue is expected next year.

“Canadians deserve a chance to vote on whether or not our system of democracy is changed and I will continue to press the government for a referendum that I and a majority of respondents from the North Okanagan- Shuswap both want and deserve,” Arnold said.
