Sparking controversy?

UPDATE: 11:46 a.m.

Local politicians want a plan in place to ensure Kal Beach and its surrounding environs are cleaned up if Canada Day fireworks are to fly over the lake again next year.

During a meeting of the Greater Vernon Advisory Council on Thursday, regional district staff were urged to make that plan part of the agreement before permission is granted for the fireworks event.

Coldstream Mayor Jim Garlick suggested a series of booms to contain the debris.

The North Okanagan Canada Day Society has plans for an even bigger fireworks show next July 1 and is asking for permission to light up over Kalamalka Lake once again.

This year, residents who live around the lakeshore in Coldstream complained their beaches were littered with debris, including paper, cardboard and plastic.

“2017 will mark Canada's 150th birthday and as such we are looking to expand the show in terms of fireworks display and additional evening events on the beach,” states committee member Terry Schmauder in a letter to the North Okanagan Regional District.

While the society acknowledges the concerns and admits that debris is “an inherent aspect of a firework display,” it has put forward some suggestions that might make some difference.

“Additional boats will be used to surround the barge site and fall out area to remove debris as well as doubling the cleanup crew on the morning following the event.

“As mentioned this debris is unavoidable in the presentation of the show itself, but we can increase the cleanup effectiveness following the show to reduce the unwanted environmental impact.”

While efforts were made to clean up debris this year, the society says wind and wave direction meant that some floated into residential areas.

“We are in the planning stages for the 2017 North Okanagan Canada Day fireworks show and will need to confirm the venue before the end of December 2016, as I will be ordering fireworks in January for next year's show,” Schmauder's letter says.

The request will be considered at Thursday's meeting of the Greater Vernon Advisory Committee.
