Where to skateboard?

The debate around skateboards on Vernon streets and sidewalks continued this week, with the city holding a discussion forum on the issue on Sept. 19.

Sixteen people with varying perspectives attended the forum, including those representing the Downtown Vernon Association, the Sustainable Environment Network Society, Teen Junction, North Okanagan Coalition for Active Transportation, Greater Vernon Cycling Advisory Committee and the Transportation Advisory Committee.

Currently, skateboarding, long-boarding, riding a scooter and rollerblading on city streets, bike lanes and sidewalks is not allowed, and those caught doing so can be fined.

Monday's discussion forum was used to get residents' feedback about the issue, after a local business owner took issue with the city promoting green modes of transportation while not allowing skateboarding within the city in April.

Those at Monday's forum came up with several proposed solutions, including changing Vernon's bylaws and signage and expanding the use of sidewalks, trails and roads.

For those who couldn't attend Monday's discussion, an online survey will be available for Vernon residents to voice their opinions until Sept. 25.

“It’s wonderful that residents from all walks of life and differing points of view took the time to help develop recommendations for council’s consideration,” said Amanda Watson, manager of Transportation for the City. “Once the survey is closed, the next step will be to compile all the information and present recommended changes to the traffic bylaw to council.”
