Flushing the lines every day

Water at six North Okanagan schools is being flushed every morning since testing showed higher-than-acceptable levels of lead in the water.

District Supt. Joe Rogers said the health of the students is a top priority and flushing the water lines has made the water safe for drinking.

Rogers said flushing the lines every morning “puts the lead count far below maximum allowable levels.”

But flushing the lines every morning indefinitely is not practical, so school officials are seeking a more permanent solution.

Rogers said the problem is some of the pre-1989 fixtures – such as taps – contain lead and must be replaced, as has already been done at Cherryville Elementary School and Cross Roads Learning Centre in Lumby.

The water from those two facilities is being tested to ensure the permanent solution did the trick.

“We will do the rest of the sites over the next few months,” said Rogers.

The affected schools that remain are BX and Mission Hill elementary schools, along with WL Seaton and Kalamalka secondary schools.

Rogers could not say how much the bill will be to change the fixtures, but the district did apply to the Ministry of Education for funding to help with those costs.
