Record crowd at IPE

It was a record-breaking day at the IPE Wednesday.

The opening day of the fair that is in its 117th year saw 18,327 people go through the gates, an increase of almost 1,000 over last year.

“It's a nice increase,” said Yvonne Paulson, IPE general manager. “I think the weather contributed to that.”

The opening day was blessed with sunny skies, but the rest of the week looks a little less inviting with the possibility of rain Friday and Saturday.

However, that will not stop the fair that has a strong agricultural focus.

“They are a rarity these days,” said Paulson. “It's a good way to show what agriculture is all about and where food comes from. It's something people should come and experience.”

Fair goers were witness to a special event Wednesday when one of the cows gave birth.

“People were able to watch a calf being born,” said Paulson.

The Armstrong Fair runs through Sunday. The popular parade takes place Saturday morning and the Wrangler Pro Rodeo Tour takes place in the evening.

West Coast Amusements has also set up one of the largest midways in the province.
