Vernon gets the game

Vernon's Kal Tire Place will host a pre-season NHL game between the Edmonton Oilers and Los Angeles Kings on Oct. 2, following the Village of Lumby's 2016 Hockeyville title win.

Lumby won the game and $100,000 for renovations to its aging Pat Duke Memorial Arena which is not equipped to deal with NHL players, broadcasters and fans.

Kraft Hockeyville and NHL officials believe “Kal Tire Place will deliver the best overall experience for Lumby residents,” said local organizer Angie Clowry, who posted the announcement on Facebook.

Kelowna's Prospera Place was also considered as a venue.

Clowry said the officials, who were inspecting the arenas just last week, say the Vernon rink will keep the game linked to the Lumby community while it also meets broadcast requirements and player and team operations.

Clowry said details of a ticket lottery will be announced on the Vote for Lumby to be Kraft Hockeyville 2016 Facebook page in the next month and all tickets will be free of charge.

Confirmed events in Lumby include a coaching clinic for Lumby Minor Hockey players, an officials' clinic hosted by NHL referees and a public question and answer period held by some NHL players on the same day as the game.
