The District of Coldstream appears ready to come out.
A rainbow crosswalk in the district is being considered in support of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and questioning (LGBTQ) community, even though it contravenes the district's cosmetic enhancements to infrastructure policy.
Coldstream Mayor Jim Garlick says council has asked for a report from staff regarding possible locations for the crosswalk “and to move ahead with it.”
At a meeting Monday night, council was presented with 38 letters and a 50-signature petition that asked council to demonstrate that Coldstream is “an inclusive and welcoming community” by showing support for LGBTQ friends and family by painting its crosswalks in rainbow colours.
Staff had recommended denying the request for the rainbow crosswalk, in line with the district's policy.
