Owls fail to soar

A couple of owls weren't too wise on Wednesday while hunting in Marshall Field.

Local animal expert Pete Wise was called around 9:30 a.m. to rescue the two, an adult and its offspring, around 9:30 a.m. They were both trapped in a soccer net.

"I think they were chasing something across the field, maybe a mouse, that dived through the net and they dived after it," said Wise.

Pictures posted on Facebook show the birds of prey seriously caught up in the netting. One had its wings splayed out.

"I had great help from the parks manager. Three of us carefully cut the net," said Wise. "They are dangerous to handle because they have such tremendous claws."

The juvenile was covered up and freed first because he was "in distress," followed by the parent.

The two were put in kennels and will be released in the area at dusk.
