Landing Plaza evacuated

UPDATE 7:17 P.M.

A pair of Vernon youths are under investigation following a bomb threat that was called in Tuesday afternoon.

Cpl. Spencer Hornoi said the bomb threat turned out to be a hoax and the two youths "from the Greater Vernon area" said a bomb was set to go off at the Landing Plaza McDonald's at 3 p.m.

The restaurant and several adjacent businesses were evacuated and Okanagan Landing Road in front of the plaza was closed to traffic.

The RCMP bomb-sniffing dog was brought in from Kelowna and traffic was backed up for some time while police investigated the credibility of the threat.

Hornoi said the investigation into the matter is ongoing.

UPDATE 3:15 P.M.

Landing Plaza was evacuated following a bomb threat to the McDonalds Tuesday afternoon, but police are quite confident it is a hoax.

Vernon RCMP Sgt. Mike Moyer said a call came in at 1:30 p.m. stating there was a bomb in the fast food restaurant.

Police responded in force and evacuated the strip mall along Okanagan Landing Road.

Moyer said through their investigation, police strongly suspect the threat is false, but they were not taking any chances.

“The indications are it was a prank call. We take calls of this nature very seriously,” said Moyer from the scene.

Along with evacuating the businesses, Okanagan Landing Road in front of the plaza was closed to traffic as police, fire and ambulance crews waited for a bomb-sniffing dog from Kelowna to arrive.

Moyer said the dog will confirm if the threat is a hoax as he suspects.

Noel Somersgill was at a cash register in Buy Low Foods when police came in and ordered the evacuation.

“He said we had to evacuate because of a bomb threat at McDonalds,” said Somersgill. “I said, 'Are you kidding?' He said, 'No, I'm not'.”

Employees from the McDonalds, Buy Low, Snap Fitness and Tim Hortons were milling around as the drama unfolded.

At least half a dozen officers were at the scene and Moyer said all available resources had been sent to deal with the situation.

Moyer was not sure when the bomb dog would arrive.

An RCMP spokesperson said the call came in around 1:30 p.m. and, while police believe it is a hoax, "all necessary precautions" are being taken.
