Chief has egg on his face

Fire Chief Jason Satterthwaite took the raw eggs in the face to join forces with a firefighter and community man he believes deserves recognition.

Known simply as 'Coach' in the North Westside area of Okanagan Lake, Lt. Mike Cantryn of North Westside Fire Rescue is being recognized by his community for his tireless work, a recent fundraising success and his commitment to the local sporting community.

Cantryn is the main face behind the Wolf Pack soccer program, providing free soccer to kids in the community from those just walking to those in their late teens.

Any kid with a passion for learning can show up and be provided with free lessons, a free jersey and free soccer cleats.

The program is funded entirely through donations, fundraisers and a whole bunch of his volunteer time.

Cantryn has been providing free lessons to all the players for the past six years and now some of his players from years past have even 'graduated' to assistant coaching positions.

To raise funds of his beloved program he convinced his fellow firefighters to join the cause on July 6.

Soccer players were invited to purchase raw eggs to bean the fire chief with, which saw Satterthwaite taking 30 eggs to the face for the cause, while Cantryn faced a few pies to the face as well.

The live auction, egg the chief, pie the coach, 50/50, field games, BBQ and bake sale brought in $1,500 for the soccer program.

“Although Mike has several official titles such as lieutenant at the North Westside Fire Rescue, he’s known as, and his station cubby simply reads 'Coach,'” says Satterthwaite.

“The North Westside community is very lucky to have such a wonderful person like Mike Cantryn.”
