21st century library

The Okanagan Regional Library in Vernon has kept up with the modern age without losing its bookish appeal, according to Mark Christensen, new head librarian.

“A modern library has a lot of the same elements that they have always had so there are books, a beautiful space, a place where people can come,” said Christensen. “Anybody is welcome. It doesn't matter what your situation is in life. You can come here and feel welcome and explore and discover.”

But the library has more to offer than the books that adorn the shelves.

Christensen points to digital resources and programs including meditation, chess, toddler time and wordpress classes.

As well, e-books and e-magazines are becoming increasingly popular. Throughout the ORL last year, 260,000 e-resources were borrowed.

“You don't have to be in the library to be able to use the library,” Christensen said.

Vernon's library on 30th Avenue, across from Justice Park, remains the busiest branch in the Okanagan Regional Library system.

Approximately 538,000 items were circulated in 2015.

“That's about 10 items for every person in the area,” said the new library boss.

Christensen, who has a Masters degree in Library and Information Sciences, took on his new job in April.
