Getting ready for Funtastic

About 15,000 people are expected to be at the DND grounds over the Canada Day long weekend as Funtastic's slo-pitch tournament and music festival takes place.

“Five thousand every night attending the concert and 200 ball teams coming here during the weekend, playing four days,” said Roel Van De Crommenacker, vice-president of the Funtastic board of directors.

Organizers arrived at the ball fields south of Vernon at 7 a.m. Monday to start setting up for the big event.

“We were here bright and early,” said Van De Crommenacker. “The tents arrived, the stage will come up. We have to put up signs, we have to put up fencing, barricades for the parking.”

An RCMP mobile command post is already in place as security, especially at night during the concerts, is a key requirement.

“We've got security on site and security works together with the RCMP,” explained Van De Crommenacker. “We also have security cameras and that makes for a safe event.”

Near the highway, Telus has installed a large tower to ensure cell phone users have good reception.

Registration for the tournament begins Thursday at noon at the DND grounds.

Both the slo-pitch tournament and the music festival begin Thursday evening.
