Dumpster fire at VSS

A custodian at Vernon Secondary School played the role of firefighter Tuesday morning.

The custodian noticed smoke coming from a dumpster and proceeded to put out the fire.

Vernon Fire Rescue deputy fire chief Jack Blair said the dumpster was a distance from the school and there was no damage.

“It's hard to tell if it was a set fire. It wasn't burning to a great degree,” said Blair, adding the small fire could have been ignited by “discarded smoking material.”

The call came in at around 10 a.m. and Blair said the fire was out by the time crews arrived.
